2013 MLB Draft Profile: Joey Martarano

Joey Martarano
3B Fruitland HS Idaho
6'3"     230 Lbs.
Bats: Rights Throws: Right

If  Martarano looks like a linebacker, it is because he is one. At 6'3" and 230 lbs. he is a physical specimen with tremendous raw power that is especially impressive in batting practice. Scouts who have watched him take BP have likened his elite power tool to that of Giancarlo Stanton, although the rest of his game is nowhere near the caliber of Stanton's. Football was Martarano primary sport for most of high school and he lacks polish. He currently plays short, but there is absolutely no chance he will play there and the team that drafts him will hope he can stick at third. Martarano is slated to play football at Boise State, which does not have a baseball program, so if he doesn't sign now he is likely done for good. His contact tool is also below average and because of his long arms he will probably rack up a lot of strikeouts. A team that is really in love with him could take a shot at him in the supplemental rounds, but he is probably more of a 2nd-4th round talent. If clubs think he is set on going to Boise State, he will probably slide out of the first 10 rounds. Despite his flaws, you can't help but love Martarano's ceiling. With his combination of strength and batspeed, he is one of the few players in this class with 30 home run potential.
